Types of Disabilities
In today’s work force, employees have to work with a variety of people with different backgrounds, including people who may have disabilities. People with disabilities are capable of doing the same job as anyone else and also producing the same quality of work. Disabled individuals may need extra resources or equipment to accommodate their disabilities, but they are highly capable and skilled, just like their co-workers.
There are many types of disabilities that an employee can have. Common disabilities include, but are not limited to:
- mobility impairments
- vision impairments
- hearing impairments
- muscular limitations
- psychiatric impairments
Mobility Impairments – these impairments impact a person’s ability to move or a person’s physical coordination. Often times, these types of impairments result from birth defects, and can affect a person’s strength, balance, and agility.
Vision Impairments – when a person has vision impairments he/she may not be able to see at all, or he/she may need glasses or contact lenses to correct his/her vision.
Hearing Impairments – when a person has hearing impairments, he/she may be completely deaf or just need assistance from a hearing aid.
Muscular Limitations – these limitations may affect a person’s speech or motor skills. When a person has muscular limitations, he/she may be limited with his/her movements or may have a difficult time speaking/making distinct sounds.
Psychiatric Impairments – these impairments are mental in nature and may include depression or a chemical imbalance. Usually, these impairments can be treated with medications and counseling, and may be difficult to notice.
